Background of the Study

Indigenous languages provide a unique medium for religious expression and are essential for maintaining cultural identity during worship. In Yenagoa, the use of native languages in religious services fosters a deep connection between worshippers and their cultural heritage (Ifeanyi, 2023). Conducting worship in indigenous languages not only aids in the comprehension of sacred texts but also reinforces the community’s linguistic traditions, which face the threat of extinction (Amadi, 2024). By integrating local languages into religious ceremonies, congregations experience enhanced spiritual engagement and cultural solidarity (Nnabugwu, 2025). However, pressures to adopt colonial or global languages in worship have begun to diminish this tradition. This study appraises current practices and their impact on cultural preservation within religious contexts (Ifeanyi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Although indigenous languages in religious worship have been shown to enhance spiritual connection and cultural continuity, there is an observable shift towards using colonial or global languages in many services in Yenagoa. This trend may weaken the cultural bond and diminish the authenticity of worship experiences (Amadi, 2024). The study seeks to understand the factors driving this shift and its repercussions on cultural identity and religious engagement (Nnabugwu, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To evaluate the role of indigenous languages in enhancing religious worship.

2. To identify factors contributing to the shift away from native languages.

3. To recommend measures for promoting the use of indigenous languages in worship.

Research Questions:

1. How does the use of indigenous languages affect religious worship in Yenagoa?

2. What factors are responsible for the shift towards non-indigenous languages?

3. What strategies can promote the sustained use of indigenous languages in worship?

Research Hypotheses:

1. The use of indigenous languages enhances the spiritual experience of worshippers.

2. Modernization and external influences significantly contribute to the language shift.

3. Policy and community interventions can promote indigenous language use in worship.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it underscores the cultural and spiritual importance of indigenous languages in religious worship. The findings will guide religious leaders, cultural advocates, and policymakers in preserving native linguistic traditions, thereby strengthening community identity and spiritual depth (Ifeanyi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to appraising the use of indigenous languages in religious worship within Yenagoa Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on language practices and their cultural impacts.

Definitions of Terms:

1. Indigenous Languages: Native languages spoken by local communities.

2. Religious Worship: Ceremonial practices and rituals performed in a religious setting.

3. Cultural Preservation: The maintenance and protection of cultural heritage and traditions.
